The End of Summer

End of SummerThis was supposed to be the summer of many things. Just like every other previous summer, I started concocting some pretty grand plans for summer 2017 with my kids.

I’d planned to work a little bit each day teaching my rising 3rd grader her times tables, using a fun program I used when I was a public school teacher. Instead, I randomly quizzed her verbally.

I’d planned to work with my rising kindergartner on learning to tie his shoes, since shoes with laces are mandatory for him. That didn’t happen at all.

I’d planned to try out all the cool awesome places around Atlanta I keep hearing about (and -um- some of which I’ve featured here), but we didn’t. [Read more…]

Turning Seven, Painting Pots, and Surprise Parties

I am now the mother of a seven year old girl.  While she will forever be my littlest Peanut, she is certainly growing up.  Like many modern mamas, I posted on my personal FB page, gushing over how amazing she is, and how proud of her I am, and yet, how I wish to hold on to every last piece of her seemingly fleeting childhood. All Fired Up Party Review

But the truth is, I’m darn proud of the young lady she is becoming.  With each transition to the next stage, I mourn the small and little pieces of her that slip away, while also welcoming the new she brings to our world.  It’s bittersweet, at best, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So, in all her squirrely-ness surrounding her birthday, she started telling us a few months beforehand that she’d “never” had a surprise party.  You know, in all of her (almost) seven years of living.

Around the same time, I got an invitation from the good folks at All Fired Up to try out one of their locations.  Opportunity knocks, y’all.  So, after asking my daughter in a very casual off-hand way if she would be interested in going to a place like this one day, she eagerly concurred.  …and the plan just fell in to place from there.

All Fired Up party review collage

I knew I didn’t want to do another indoor playground party, as we had done that every year since she turned 3.  My son’s fourth birthday, which is days before Christmas, was celebrated with friends with a very small (on-the-cheap) party (basically, a glorified playdate with three school friends), which was perfect for him.  So the opportunity to mix-it-up for her 7th birthday sounded refreshing.

Our experience with the Alpharetta location of All Fired Up, from start to finish, was absolutely fantastic!  Since it was a surprise party, we planned for my daughter and my husband to “run errands” in the morning, and then meet up at All Fired Up at 10 minutes after the hour.  So, my mother- and father-in-law came with me and my son about ten minutes early to get things set up, and welcome our party guests as they arrived.  Samantha kindly let us in early and helped brief us on the party, and helped us get set up.  The staff remained friendly, helpful, and patient throughout the entire party.

As the party guests began to arrive, they were greeted warmly and shown which pieces they could pick from for painting during the party.  They took the time to help them make their selections, and then wrote their names on the bottom of their pieces for them.  There was a wide variety of choices, which was great, since my 4 year old son wanted something “boy-ish” to paint (his words, not mine, I swear!).  Most of the other guests were girls ranging from age 6-8, as well as my 3 year old niece.

Once the guest of honor arrived, and the stun of the surprise faded for her, she also picked out what she wanted to paint, and the party hosts got things under way.  The staff walked the girls over to the paints, showed them the large paint selection, and explained how to use the tiles available to put little dabs of paint on so they could paint their pieces.

While the guests worked on their pottery, the staff came around to have them sign a special “happy birthday” plate for my daughter.  We were able to take it home that day, and bake it in the oven.  She now has a great token to remember this occasion for years to come, and it’s a practical piece we can use each year on her birthday!

As the girls completed their pottery, the staff happily took their pieces so they could be fired, and made a note on their sheet for our party list, so it would be easy to quickly match the piece with the child upon pickup.  When most of the party guests had completed their pieces, the tables were tidied up so we could sing and serve cake.

P.S.  If you’ve never experienced a double-layer cookie cake from Sam’s Club, your life is incomplete.  That’s all I’ll say on the matter.  😉

The entire party lasted about 90 minutes, but it was the perfect time for the kids to gather, celebrate, and have fun.  I’ve found in the past, there was an awkward time period during parties where folks linger and shuffle around, not really sure what to do.  This did not occur here.

All in all, I was super-pleased with the service we got from the staff at All Fired Up, and we will certainly return for another party, or simply another outing.  Everyone came away raving about the experience, and it was such a relief to have a relatively easy party for my daughter.

If you’re looking for a new place for birthday parties, casual get-togethers, and even summer camps, give All Fired Up a try – you won’t be disappointed.  They’ve got three locations in the Atlanta area, including Marietta and Emory, along with the Alpharetta location I attended.  You can even sign up your kids for art camp over spring break or during the summer.  Furthermore, they have creative art classes for both adults and for kids.

All-Fired-Up-review_artcamp

And, of course, I wouldn’t be Atlanta’s FRUGAL Mom if I didn’t tell you about their frequent painter program, which rewards you for -you guessed it!- frequent visits.  Ask your location for further details.  Oh!  And All Fired Up also offers fundraiser opportunities for local schools, churches, and organizations – what a great way to think outside the box for a good cause.

Thanks again to the wonderful people at All Fired Up for a fantastic birthday part for my daughter! Check them out on Facebook, Pinterest, and join their mailing list to stay abreast of upcoming events and specials!

As a mother, I think it’s important to find ways to do “grown-up” things with other grown-ups, without a hint of kids around.  Ok, fine, sometimes I consider a trip to the grocery store good escape…  But now Buckhead has another great place for you to escape: Painting with a Twist.  Here, you can paint on a canvas, enjoy good music, wine or beer, and create unique, personal masterpieces they can take to their homes or gift to others. The artwork ranges from landscapes, abstracts and cityscapes, to creative renderings of animals, iconic buildings and florals. [Read more…]

So I completely get that there are quite a few “transplants” in the Atlanta area who have plenty of experience with snow.  Heaven help us, we all learned last year just how poorly Atlanta as a whole deals with snow, so how on earth can Atlantans enjoy the local phenomenon known as Snow Mountain?  It’s simple, we slap on our rain boots, and enjoy the cold snow, Southern Style.  😉

I was recently invited out to Stone Mountain’s Snow Mountain with my family to enjoy the tubes, the snow, and the atmosphere.  If you’ve never been, make sure you go NOW, as it’s only here through Sunday March 1!  Littles can enjoy The SnowZone (perhaps a child’s first expereince with -ahem- building a snow man), and enjoy the adventures of the Little Angels, complete with SnoBoggans – bigger kids will LOVE Avalanche Alley and Tube Runners. The whole family can indulge in snacks and treats at the SnoDeck, and then enjoy S’mores at Snow Fire Point while watching the sun go down.

Make sure to book your times in advance, as you get two hours to do the tubing.  Also, check for discount tickets if you’re a Gas South customer.  Check with ticket information for further details.

It was a wonderful experience, but honest-to-goodness, I just wasn’t sure how this Southern girl was going to get her two littles ready for the snow.  Thankfully, my mom got the kids snow suits for Christmas, so they had a basic outfit, at least.  I will share a few tips:

Today, my daughter Carol and I worked together to kick some butt.  Well, sorta.  We were invited to attend a special session at UFC Gym Perimeter, to try out their new kids program.  She was elated by the experience.  Not only did we get to peruse through the equipment before class began, but she also got to test out a pair of boxing gloves and a super-cool tech-y punching bag.

At UFC Gym, boys and girls learn self-defense, self-confidence and discipline while having fun in a safe and entertaining group class format. It’s also a great way for them to burn energy and have fun!  Taught by a staff of rockstar, attentive professionals, UFC Gym Perimeter kids classes help your little one learn self-confidence, coordination, discipline and self-defense.  Plus, it’s fun!UFC Gym Perimeter Kids Class

The class began with the kids warming up  for 15 minutes, using fun stretching and cardio races to hold the interest of the wide age range of the kids attending.  The highlight for Carol, of course, was the whole class getting in to “The Cage” for more fun and games (and excerise, but don’t tell her that part!), including planks, squats, and fun-and-friendly boxing moves.  The class concluded with a cool down stretch and a game.  Seriously, Carol. had. a. blast.  In the week since, every time we drive in that direction, she asks if we’re going to “the fun gym” so she can “play games again”. 20+ Signs You’re From Atlanta

**This post may contain affiliate links. I receive a small amount of compensation when you purchase from my links, which I"ll totally blow on waffle fries and sweet tea, y'all!**

Signs You're From Atlanta

Atlanta.  A’lan-a.  The A-T-L.  “Hot-lanta” even…  If you’ve spent any significant amount of time in my fair city, you’ve heard it all.  And then some.  But what makes Atlantans stand out?  What makes us who we are?  Here’s my interpretation.  You can probably relate, whether you’re a true native, or a transplant – if you’ve spent time in Atlanta, you can relate to these.

Signs You’re From Atlanta

  1. That second “t” is silent.  The city is called “Aht/lan/nna”.  Period.  Ok, depending on how far back you can trace your roots, you may also omit the first “t”.
  2. Speaking of pronunciation, it’s called “Co-Cola”.  And it umbrellas every brown carbonated beverage known to man.  But drinking anything else is sacrilegious ’round here.  That pesky “P” word may as well be a 4-letter-word…Signs You're From Atlanta - Coca-Cola
  3. At least once, you’ve smugly told an out-of-towner to just follow 285, that it’ll lead them to their destination.  You cheeky sunnuvagun!Signs Youre From Atlanta - 285
  4. You know exactly what ITP and OTP mean!Signs Youre From Atlanta - ITP OTP
  5. Even if you matriculated elsewhere, you’ve spent at least one night an hour northeast, in downtown Athens.  But you probably don’t remember it.
  6. You’ve spent at least one St. Patrick’s Day a few hours south in beautiful Savannah.  But you probably don’t remember it.
  7. You can find Piedmont, Centennial, and all the other cool free things to do around Atlanta.

  8. You know the rarity of meeting a “Grady Baby” or a “Northside Baby” who’s been here all his/her life.Signs You're From Atlanta - Northside Baby Grady Baby
  9. When reading Gone with the Wind, you can identify many of the streets and towns mentioned throughout the story.Signs You're From Atlanta - Gone with the Wind
  10. You’ve met at least one Dunwoody house wife.  Probably playing tennis.
  11. You know where The Ted is, even if said Ted is on its way out.Signs You're From Atlanta - Turner Field
  12. You also know where the (downtown) Varsity is.Signs You're From Atlanta - The Varsity
  13. But you further know all the cool kids really prefer Zesto’s instead.Signs Youre From Atlanta - Zestos
  14. You also know where The Big Chicken is.Signs You're From Atlanta - The Big Chicken
  15. But chuckle whenever you hear someone say they live off a road named Peachtree.Signs Youre From Atlanta- Peachtree
  16. You can pinpoint precisely where “down yonder” is.  And you’re fixin’ta go there.  Y’all ever been?
  17. You know to bring a book for your morning commute, afternoon commute, or trip to the grocery store.
  18. IHOP SchmIHOP!  If you want good (greasy) breakfast grub, you head to the Waffle House.  After all, there’s one on almost every corner.Signs You're From Atlanta - Waffle House, baby
  19. You’ve rocked out to some Skynyrd at the Laser Show once or twice, and recently indulged in the closest thing Atlanta regularly gets to “snow” at Snow Mountain.Signs Youre From Atlanta - Stone Mountain
  20. You know at least a few folks who bleed red and black.  And probably folks who prefer other colors, but -well- meh…  You probably also know there’s an alternate spelling of “dog”, which is equally endearing, particularly ‘tween the hedges.Signs You're From Atlanta - UGA
  21. …which means, you fully understand the sacred nature of football Saturdays in the fall.
  22. Even if you’re from the suburbs, you tell people you’re from Atlanta.  Unless you live in Gwinnett County, then, inexplicably, you say you’re from Gwinnett.
  23. The only acceptable sweet tea is served in a styofoam cup from Chick-fil-a.  But you’re aunt Nancy’s runs a very, very close second.Signs You're From Atlanta - Chick-Fil-A Sweet Tea
  24. Also, the only acceptable chicken sandwich is from Chick-fil-a.  Nothing.  Else.  Comes.  Close.
  25. You know the “metro Atlanta area” consists of approximately 1/3 of the state of Georgia, and growing.
  26. (amended in light of our recent winter weather)  You’ve seen, firsthand, the absolute kindness of strangers, and -no matter how far north or south your roots are planted- you know the meaning of true Southern Hospitality.

The Day Atlanta Stood Still 1-28-14

In case anyone is wondering why schools in the South close down at the mere mention of snow, take today in Atlanta as an example. Students and faculty are spending the night in a handful schools across the metro area, emergency shelters are opening up to provide stranded motorists a place to stay after spending HOURS in standstill traffic (usually because they ran out of gas!), GADOT reports over 940 accidents today, folks are opening up their homes to others in need across the metro area: the city basically shut down.

First Watch Comes to Dunwoody!

**This post may contain affiliate links. I receive a small amount of compensation when you purchase from my links, which I"ll totally blow on waffle fries and sweet tea, y'all!**

  First Watch sign

If you’re in or near the Dunwoody area, brace yourself: there is an amazing new restaurant opening up that will blow you away!  Earlier last week, I had the pleasure of getting a “sneak peek” dining at First Watch in Dunwoody yesterday, and -well, yum!

I met up with Diana, my blogger pal over at Sandy Springs Macaroni Kid, and had my toddler son tag along as well.  We were kindly greeted upon entering, and promptly seated, with a high chair immediately produced for my son.  Our server, James, was patient and kind.  Patient was a must for me, not only because I had a toddler with me, but because I just couldn’t’ decide what I wanted — there were SO MANY tasty options from which to choose!

You see, at First Watch, the menu is chock full of fresh, healthy dishes prepared made to order.  It’s a breakfast, brunch, and lunch place, so there’s plenty of dishes that offer an egg white options (all cage-free) at no charge, as well as fresh seasonal produce from local growers whenever possible.  Since I am a sucker for breakfast foods, I sat staring at the long list of delicious entrees, including ten different omelets, wraps, crepes, skillet hashes (five choices!), and drool-worthy pancakes, french toast, and much much more!  Many of these dishes were served with a cup of fresh fruit, too.  Oh, and all patrons are welcome to complimentary Sunrise Select Premium Blend coffee.

FirstWatch_eggsbenedict

This was Diana’s meal – most of which went home in a box!

Their lunch menu includes a variety of fresh spring mix salads, sandwiches, and soups.  To entice you even further, they offer a “2 For You” lunch option: pair any two 1/2 salads, 1/2 sandwich, or a cup of soup.

I was treated to delicious sweet tea.  As a Southern girl, that was essential.  My tea was so delicious, I think I got two refills, and then asked for a to-go cup!  They also offer your standard gammer of beverages, sodas, juice, milk, hot chocolate, San Pelligrino water, and herbal teas.  And don’t forget that complmentary coffee, too.

First Watch Kids Menu

Remember my son was with me?  So I got to test out the kids menu as well.  I’m seldom really impressed with kids’ menus: they tend to offer standard not-so-healthy options that my kids don’t even eat anyways.  (Seriously?  My kids don’t care for chicken nuggets or mac and cheese, and I’m ok with that.)  I digress.  The kids menu, which was presented on a placemat with crayons for my son to color upon (or -um- nibble on the crayons…) offered simpler versions of the dishes on the regular menu, including pancakes, waffles, ham sandwich, turkey sandwich, french toast, fresh fruit crepe, or a simple bacon and egg.  All served with a cup of fresh fruit, and a beverage of choice – all for $4.99.

This is the french toast he was served…  YUM!

First Watch - kids menu

I was amazed how accommodating the staff were.  My son took a strong liking to the fresh fruit, particularly the strawberries and blueberries. He gobbled up all of his, then mine, and Diana offered some of hers as well.  During one of the many check-ins the staff had with us, they noted he liked the blueberries and strawberries.  Next thing I knew, they brought him out a big bowl filled with strawberries and blueberries.  He was in berry heaven, and did a great job gobbling them up with his spoon!

First Watch
All in all, I was super-impressed with my entire experience at First Watch.  I can’t wait to take my husband and daughter with us again very soon.  And my parents.  And my in-laws.  And neighbors.  And -well- you get the drift – now go see for yourself!  🙂

Also, when you sign up for their Sun eClub, you will get specials and coupons delivered right to your inbox, including BOGO coupons, as well as a free entree on your birthday!

Catch Air – Birthday Party Review

**This post may contain affiliate links. I receive a small amount of compensation when you purchase from my links, which I"ll totally blow on waffle fries and sweet tea, y'all!**

Catch Air Review

When the time came to plan for my daughter’s third birthday party, I knew one thing was certain: I didn’t want it at MY house!  With a newborn son and a highly energetic three year old, the last thing I wanted was to set up and then clean up for a party.  However, I wanted something special for my daughter, as we’d never really had a party for her yet, and since she’d had a big year, complete with becoming a big sister and all.

Catch Air Review

Within the span of a month, we took her to a -um- certain dark play place with a big mouse, and later to bouncy-type place featuring a particular primate.  Then we were invited to birthday party at Catch Air in John’s Creek location, and suddenly the choice was clear: my little girl was going to have her birthday party at Catch Air John’s Creek.

Catch Air Review

Catch Air, a combination bouncy house and indoor playground, had something to peek the interest of any child.  Plenty of inflatables throughout the facility for jumping,  along with simulated “fitness equipment”, ball pits, slides, token games, humongous train set, “balloon house”, a hamster roller, an interactive dance floor (think: the piano scene from Big)  and much all keep kids ages 12 and under occupied for hours and hours of entertainment!  And there’s four locations in the north metro area, including John’s Creek, Cumming, Suwanee, and Marietta.

Catch Air Review

Overall, I was exceptionally pleased with my experience at Catch Air in John’s Creek.  With a personal party coordinator leading the way, they took care of the set up and clean up (every mother’s dream!), as well as supplied the “party accessories”: table cloths, plates, forks, drinks for the party kids, and even invitations.  …and if you’re an absent-minded mother, like yours truly, and forget the all-important birthday cake candle, they’ve got you covered!  After 80 minutes of play in perhaps the coolest indoor playground I’ve seen, Carol got to have a “dance party” with Buzz Lightyear (her movie character du joir).  Buzz then led the kids over to the double sinks, where we all washed our hands before going in to the party room.  We were allotted 40 minutes in the “party room”, set up for the obligatory singing of “happy birthday” as she blew out the candles.  The party coordinator assisted in bringing the cake over, then cutting it up and helping to serve.  She then stepped back and let the kids have their fun.

Catch Air Review

Afterwards, I was also pleased to see the party room get thoroughly wiped down — a level of conscientiousness that I cannot say for other similar places.  The bathrooms were exceptionally clean and well-lit; although the floor seemed slightly slippery with socks on.  As a mother and uber-germophobe, I could really appreciate the level of attention the staff paid to cleanliness.

Catch Air Review

We were allowed to bring outside dry snacks, drinks for the adults, and the cake.  You have the option of ordering Papa Johns pizza or Chick-fil-a (and those of you who know me will be shocked to hear I opted out of CFA — I still don’t know how I passed *that* up!!), for an additional fee.  (Please note: the food options differ at the other locations.)  Our party coordinator assisted in setting up all the snacks and beverages, which allowed my husband and I the opportunity to just sit back and watch our daughter play.

Catch Air Review

Again, my experience with Catch Air was fantastic.  For $5-8 a visit for walk-ins (depending on your child’s age), and discount codes available frequently on their Facebook pages, you can’t go wrong taking the kids here.  There’s even free wifi for parents, as well as coffee and a snack bar available.  There’s four locations (Johns Creek, Cumming, Marietta, and Suwanee) in the north metro area.

Care to try out Catch Air? I highly recommend “liking” Catch Air on FB, since they frequently post “passwords” to get you discounts for walk-in visits!  Also, here’s a few more suggestions for snagging discount tickets to Catch Air: Groupon has tickets from time to time, but you can also buy a 10-visit pass and save directly at your location.  You’ll want to ask if your location’s pass is good at other locations; some allow it, others don’t.  🙂
