Money saver! Keep bottled water in your car

My kids are all old enough to be out of the sippy cup stage, but there are still times when we are out running errands and they ask for something to drink.  Rather than stopping at the gas station to get a sugary soda for a buck, I have started carrying bottles of water in my car.  I can pick up a case of 24 store brand bottles of water for about $3.00, which comes out to less than $0.13 a bottle.  I just throw them in the console in the front of our van, and I can pull them out and pass them around as needed.  It’s a quick, inexpensive way to have a drink on hand, and eliminates the need to stop at the gas station and get a drink.  And chips.  And candy.  And all the other things I tend to impulse buy when I’m walking up to the register.

water-saver-upright

Of course, if you are really organized, you could purchase some water bottles at the dollar store and fill them up before heading out, which would be even cheaper.  I have found that once I started carrying water with us, my kids are much less apt to ask for a drink, as they really aren’t thirsty, they just want a treat from the gas station.

Another great way to cut back on impulse spending while running errands is to keep some crackers or fruit snacks with you.  If I’m going grocery shopping before lunch time, it’s an easy way to keep the kids from “starving'” without breaking my budget.  Planning ahead is always a great idea, it’s just actually doing it that can be a challenge.

Do you find yourself stopping to purchase drinks and snacks for your kids while you are out and about?  How much money could you save each month if you just planned ahead and brought some along instead?

Revising My Mission Statement

**This post may contain affiliate links. I receive a small amount of compensation when you purchase from my links, which I"ll totally blow on waffle fries and sweet tea, y'all!**

Mission Statement

In the last year or so, the number of “deal/frugal bloggers” has exploded exponentially!  I started Atlanta’s Frugal Mom as a means to share my money-saving strategies with my continuously growing reader base.

However, as happens, life seems to slow down the pace of the blog.  The idea of AFM was born shortly after my daughter was born, and became a reality about a year thereafter.  In the meantime, -well- life continued to happen.  I started teaching preschool, and then found out our cozy family of three would be expanding, along with my waistline.  ;o)  With pregnancy and then the birth of my son, the blog simply had to take a backseat.

While I feel like I’ve learned much about myself and about blogging in the process, as well as met many incredible bloggers -many of whom I am now proud to call my friends- I feel like I fell behind the times a bit, so to speak.  I’ve given careful consideration to the direction AFM needs to take, in order to continue to stay relevant in a world over-saturated with deal/coupon blogs.  I have no intention of discontinuing what I’ve been doing, on the contrary!

I do, however, plan to shift my focus slightly.  There are, after all, three components to Atlanta’s Frugal Mom:

  1. Atlanta — events and opportunities in and around the metro Atlanta area;
  2. Frugal – frugal living, including but not limited to, coupons and money-saving advice and deals;
  3. Mom – parenting advice, “frugal parenting”, little nuggets of sage wisdom (hee hee!), and my own observations, lamentations, and curiosities relating to being a mom.
Up until now, my focus has been on the Frugal portion of the blog, with “Atlanta” coming in at a close second.  However, the “mom” component simply can’t be ignored.  With that, I bring to you “Wordless Wednesdays“, where I share little glimpses in to my life as a mother, rich with sweet little red-headed morsels of cuteness. As well as my “Frugal Parenting” pieces — which serve as quick little snippets of ideas to take and use as you see fit.  (And if you see anything Pinterest-worthy, by all means “pin” away!)

In addition to shifting my focus, I am rather excited to get to start bringing you all many giveaway opportunities, as they become available to me.  With my “bloggers circle” expanding, comes more networking, which has opened many new doors for me.   I have partiicpated in quite a few giveaways within the last six months — some being fantastic opportunities, other -eh- not so great.  But with each experience comes new lessons and ideas, and I learn to be a bit more discerning about with whom I choose to work.

I digress.  My mission statement is shifting, as I alluded to earlier.  I will always continue to bring my readers great deals, but I must also focus on the other two pieces: Atlanta and parenting.  After all, I would not be who I am if I was just “frugal”.  :o)

Applebees Under 550 Menu — A review in Deliciousness!

**This post may contain affiliate links. I receive a small amount of compensation when you purchase from my links, which I"ll totally blow on waffle fries and sweet tea, y'all!**

I’m still salivating just thinking about the event I attended a few weeks ago: a sampling of Applebees Under 550 Menu!  I was treated to five of their dishes, all of which are under 550 calories, and was delighted with the rich flavor of each.  We also had the option of sampling two of their cocktails, each around 100 calories each. (Being a nursing mother only 4 weeks post-partum, I simply could not partake.)  I’m providing you my account of each dish below.

Before we adjourned, we were further treated to “punch cards”, good in the greater Atlanta area Applebees locations only:   You get a “punch” for each Under 550 OR Weight Watchers item you purchase.  Once you get 5 punches, you get a FREE under 550 or Weight Watchers menu item!  How cool is that?  I have two of these cards to share with my readers.  If you’d like one, email me with the subject line: Applebee’s Punch Card and I will mail to the first TWO people who respond.  :o)

Sizzling Asian Shrimp & Broccoli – Sizzling, blackened shrimp with rice, broccoli, red peppers, sugar snap peas, water chesnuts, mushrooms and bok choy, atopped with a sweet and spicy sauce.  (Let me interject here and warn you, I do NOT eat shrimp; therefore, my dish was all of the above, minus the shrimp.)  Every one of us cleaned our plate with this dish!!  The sauce was lightly spicy, and not too much sauce to take away from the taste of the veggies, but enough to give it a nice kick.  Again, I did not eat any shrimp, but I -along with the other participants- cleared our entire plate!

Roasted Garlic Sirloin – A 7 oz sirloin, served with sauteed onions, a portobella mushroom stuffed with creamed spinach and a dash of Parmesan to top, and a side of herb potatoes.  Okay, let me just say, I can count on my one finger the number of times I have voluntarily eaten steak until this meal — it’s normally just not my cup of tea.  However, I thoroughly enjoyed this steak!!  it was juicy, tender, and quite flavorful.  I wasn’t a fan of the onions, as I prefer mine to be sauteed a bit more; otherwise, this dish was to die for!  Again, I cleared my plate!

Grilled Dijon Chicken and Portobellos – This was a creamy and delicious dish, which again beckoned me to enjoy!  I’ve had my share of chicken dishes that were healthy but just …blah.  Not this one.  It was a creamy balance of taste and good for you.  Were I eating this as a dish all on its own (and not after sampling two other dishes) I would easily clear my plate!

Signature Sirloin and Garlic Herb Shrimp – In all honesty, by the time I got to the fourth dish, I was already pretty stuffed!  I’d already had the equivalent of one FULL dish, but trudge through I did, all in the name of sampling, right?  ;o)  I must say I didn’t like this steak as much as the first steak dish.  Again, I’m not a steak person, but this one just -hmm- lacked the full flavor of the first dish.  And -as before- I declined the shrimp.  Although I didn’t dislike this dish, it simply wasn’t my favorite.  The 7 oz sirloin was topped with shrimp in a cream sauce, served with herb potatoes, veggies, bruschetta, sliced almonds, and parsley.

Sizzling Chili Lime Chicken – The final dish was met with a little less enthusiasm, simply because we were all pretty stuffed by then.  However, this one was certainly packed full of flavor as well.  Tender, juicy chicken pieces were paired with a spicy chili sauce; served with steamed veggies, rish, fresh cilantro, and a hint of lime juice.  The dish came together with a nice kick to it — I would certainly order this again!

Oh, and there was the opportunity to sample their SkinnyBee Margarita (around 100 calories), however, being only 4 weeks post-partum, I thought it best not to indulge.  But the gals who did said they were not disappointed.

While attending the tasting, we were informed of three new dishes joining the Weight Watchers/Under 550 menu: Cabernet Mushroom Sirloin, Creamy Parmesean Chicken, and Grilled Jalapeno-Lime Shrimp.  How delish do they sound?!!  Coming February 20, 2012!

Remember, if you’d like a “punch card” good for a free meal after you purchase five, send me an email with the subject line: Applebee’s Punch Card and I will mail to the first TWO people who respond.  :o)

Thanks, again, to Applebee’s of Atlanta for hosting such a great event!!

Read your SALES ADS carefully!

**This post may contain affiliate links. I receive a small amount of compensation when you purchase from my links, which I"ll totally blow on waffle fries and sweet tea, y'all!**

Take a moment and look at this snippet from this week’s Walgreen’s ad.  What do you notice?

Hopefully, you see that the “coupon” price of a single roll of tape is NOT cheaper than the 3-roll pack, featured right above!  In this instance, it’s cheaper to pay twice as much because you get three times the product!  You’d pay $2.97 for 3 individual rolls with the couponed price, but only $1.99 for 3 rolls with the sale price.

Even utilizing currently available coupons, (namely $1/3 rolls, exp 11/18/11 SS), you’re still better off with the 3-pack.  It’s the difference between paying $1 for three after coupons, or $2 for 3 after coupons.

Check out these two excerpts from this week’s Kroger ads for Hillshire Farms deli meat:

The above features the 8-9 oz packages, on sale for $2.99 each, and a participating item in Kroger’s frequent $5 off 10 items promo.  But below is the 16 oz package for less than twice the price:

Even with the current promo, the larger size meat is still cheaper than the smaller tubs, more prominently featured as a sales item.  For two 8-9 oz tubs, you’d pay $5.98, verses $4.99 for one 16 oz package.

Granted, I understand that for some, buying the smaller tub may make sense, perhaps because you don’t eat the meat fast enough before it goes bad. (But, my goodness!  This stuff does keep for a while!!)  Or perhaps your meat of choice is only available in the smaller size?  In any case, it always PAYS to look!

Just a cautionary point I wanted to pass on to you all this weekend, as a reminder to ALWAYS check the unit price of items you are purchasing, and learn to look beyond the shiny, bright newness of items on “sale”!!

After Potty Training: "Going" on the Go (Folding, padded potty seat PR)

**This post may contain affiliate links. I receive a small amount of compensation when you purchase from my links, which I"ll totally blow on waffle fries and sweet tea, y'all!**

The folding, padded potty seat

As you may recall, I just recently finished a successful (and short) stint potty training my two-year old daughter back at the end of May.  She took to the task like a pro, which gave me the confidence *I* needed to take her out and about, and know we could minimize accidents.  However, my biggest hang-up had long been the dreaded public restroom.

Need I say more?  A curious toddler’s small hands simply can’t contain themselves in a new environment, and -well- the nastiness that you likely conjured up at the mere words “public restroom” are enough to send one sprinting for a can of Lysol, right?

The bulky “on the go”
potty seat — BOO!

Furthermore, any mother will attest to the amount of STUFF one must lug around, even with a potty-trained child: your own purse, a (former) diaper bag, and miscellaneous other bags, depending on the occasion and the circumstances.   For me, shopping entailed the addition of my bag full of reusable shopping bags AND my coupon binder bag.  Oh, plus one highly-active and surprisingly fast red-headed toddler.  Need I say my hands were already quite full?

So, to add ANOTHER bag to the mix seems rather silly.  However, when potty training commenced, we had only the regular (unfoldable) potty seat (see pic to your left), which I kept in a reusable shopping bag, along with a pack of sanitizing wipes.  To say this was a bit much is an understatement!

But not bringing a potty seat was NOT an option.  We’d tried that ONCE on an early post-PT outing, and her tiny little boopah simply proved too small for the grown-up potty seat, even with me holding her hands for balance and support; therefore, she couldn’t get comfortable enough to go.  :o(

Enter: the FOLDABLE, padded potty seat!  I’d had my eye on this for a while, and had been unable to find anything comparable in the stores.  (The closest I’d found was a foldable, NON-padded plastic potty seat; but all the reviews I’d read suggested they were flimsy and a waste of money.)  By chance I saw it being featured one day on My Precious Kid‘s Facebook page, and decided it was time.  The more I saw it, the  more I was convinced this folding, padded potty seat was precisely the answer to my daughter’s potty prayers!

When it arrived, I first marveled at the small size of the entire shipping package!  Upon opening it, I simply couldn’t contain my excitement — I eagerly opened it up, and showed my daughter her “new potty seat!”  We hadn’t anywhere to go that evening, but I insisted we go out.  Out we went, with our “new potty seat” in tow, which fit rather neatly in her (former) diaper bag.  (Big plus, right there!!)   Did I mention it comes with a washable bag?  It also holds a travel-size pack of wipes, too.

Lo and behold, we hadn’t been at Tar-Zshay for more than a few minutes, when my daughter uttered those famous words “I go potty.”

For the first time EVER, I eagerly dashed to the public restrooms -skipping almost- as I told my daughter how we were going to get to try out her new potty seat.  My excitement was contagious!  From the first time we used it, it has been a gem — it folds easily, it sets up easily, and with a row of toilet paper or a toilet seat cover between the “new potty seat” and the regular one, it offers this germ-a-phobe significant peace of mind!  And to be able to pack it all away in a tiny bag, which fits nicely in her (former) diaper bag is just icing on the potty-training cake!

We’ve had it for a little over a month, and I dare not leave home without it!  It certainly fits in just about every toilet we’ve used, save for the old rickety one at the Atlanta Zoo, but that’s a whole ‘nother ball of wax…  We had but one “accident” with the new potty seat, where I think I simply didn’t have it fitted properly inside the toilet seat.  No big deal though, since I was squatting right next to my daughter — she actually just giggled about getting her boopah a little wet.

Her enthusiasm for the seat is still in tact, too.  Many times when we merely walk in to the public restrooms, she’ll grin and excitedly declare “new!  potty!  seat!” — as I breath a sigh of relief knowing my daughter has the comfort she needs to “go” on the go, while I have the peace of mind knowing that we CAN take extended excursions and she’ll be accommodated, just about anywhere we go.

My personal thanks to Kay Green, of My Precious Kid, for providing me with the opportunity to review this awesome product; as well as for her sage words of wisdom, with all things related to child safety and potty training!  (As well as my sincerest apologies for not posting this review ina much more timely manner!)

The foldable potty seat is available here, for only $11.99, plus shipping.  Use the promo code 2SEPTEN for an 10% off!  (Also, you can enjoy free shipping for orders over $100, by entering promo code FREESHIP100.) While you’re there, check out the entire website, for a vast array of products devoted to child safety and wellness!

Next up in the series, I’ll discuss items I highly recommend for potty training, as well as items that aren’t essential, but can make life a whole lot easier.  If you have any items to suggest for this, feel free to contact me.  :o)

Walgreens BOGO is a GO GO – The Final? Chapter!

**This post may contain affiliate links. I receive a small amount of compensation when you purchase from my links, which I"ll totally blow on waffle fries and sweet tea, y'all!**

Oh, jiggety-jig-jig-jig!  I have been doing a virtual dance for about an hour now.  Virtual is as far as my dancing goes, trust me…  I think Elaine Benes over here sufficiently explains why.  Here’s the latest news flash for my fellow frugal friends:

On a whim this afternoon, I stopped in at a different Walgreens from the one I ventured in to on Monday, just to test the water.  Perhaps after a killer workout this morning, coupled with a little too much caffeine, I was ready to put up a fight.  (In case you haven’t been following my Walgreens saga, start here, then go here.)

As it turned out, I got all worked up for no reason whatsoever.  The shampoo & conditioner rang up as advertised in this week’s ad, and I got the accompanying RR.  Better yet, the Right Guard rang up BOGO, as it should have, and the cashier accepted ALL of my BOGO manufacture coupons without a moment’s hesitation.  The register blipped each time she scanned the BOGO coupons, and she paused to write in the value for each product.  End of story!

So, I am very happy to report that I was able to purchase 4 Herbal Essence products, 4 sticks of Right Guard deodorant, a package of Clearasil, and a store brand 20 oz soda, for a whopping $6.92.  And I walked away with $1.00 in RR.

You want to hear the twist of this tale?  The location I succeeded at today, is the very location I called to get clarification on their BOGO policy.  The manager here told me they do NOT accept BOGO manufacture coupons in conjunction with store BOGO sales.  This manager could not explain WHY this was the case, beyond “it just wouldn’t make sense”, and referred me to the corporate number. (Corporate, btw, has yet to contact me!)

….and on a random note, as I was perched to pull out of the parking lot, I witnessed a pedestrian wonder in to the middle of the street, and get struck by a truck.  ….no jiggety-jig there, folks….**This post may contain affiliate links. Walgreen’s BOGO a NO GO?

**This post may contain affiliate links. I receive a small amount of compensation when you purchase from my links, which I"ll totally blow on waffle fries and sweet tea, y'all!**

I’ll try to stick the the facts, and keep it short.  (…deep breath…)

I went to Walgreen’s today, with a carefully planned list after studying this week’s sales and accompanying coupons.  My planned purchases included a store BOGO sale, paired with a manufacture’s BOGO coupon.

When the cashier couldn’t get the BOGO coupon to work, he suggested we get a manager.  The manager stated that the coupons would not work, because in the state of Georgia, it is illegal to “sell” an item for free, that there would be no applicable sales tax.  He insisted on this stance, even after I shared THE STORE’S CORPORATE POLICY.  (See below.)  I knew this was not the case, as I’ve made these types of transactions before.

Long story short, I ended up scooping up my coupons and daughter, canceling the transaction, and walking out.  The ordeal had taken more time than it should have, and we were running behind schedule.

I’ve called a few stores, to see if it was just the specific location I was at, or if it’s a consistent policy across the board.  Each store said they can NOT accept BOGO manuf coupons on BOGO sale items.  However, NO ONE could explain why to me.
I brought up the following points, each being confirmed by the store’s manager:
* it is the STORE that has the sale, not the manufacture;
* manufacture’s reimburse the store for the amount of coupons;
* therefore, the store is offering ONE free item, and the manufacture is offering ONE free item;
* sale tax is calculated pre-manufacture coupon amount.
I was eventually referred to the 1-800 number.  The lady I spoke with could not offer me an explanation, and thus referred my “case” to “senior management”.  I should receive a call within the next two business days…  We shall see!

Taken directly from Walgreen’s coupon policy:

Buy One, Get One Free Coupons

  • When items are featured in a Buy One, Get One Free promotion, up to two coupons can be used against the items being purchased, as long as the net price does not go below zero for the items being purchased.
  • Sales tax must be paid for any Buy One, Get One Free coupon offers, if required by applicable state laws”

**Sigh**  I’m sure this will turn in to an ongoing saga.

Were any of YOU able to make their BOGO sales work with a manuf BOGO coupon??  If so, I’d love to live vicariously through you, so please share!  :o)

Lessons Learned and Reflections Made for 2010

**This post may contain affiliate links. I receive a small amount of compensation when you purchase from my links, which I"ll totally blow on waffle fries and sweet tea, y'all!**

Lessons Learned and Reflections Made for 2010
2010 was a passionate year for me. Rather, it was a year in which I actively pursued my passions, or rekindled or maintained the things about which I have long been passionate. In February, armed with a stack of resumes and a fiery red-head’s legs loyally clamped to my hip, I set about to re-enter the workforce, pursuing an old flame of mine: working with the Little Ones. Through a long process, much hand-wringing, a few interviews here and there, and turning down job offers that simply were not right for myself or my family at the time, I found myself working at my old church. The church where my passion for the Little Ones all began. I have yet to be disappointed, and continue to marvel that I am -once again- getting paid to do something I love doing!
After much prodding by friends and family, I also found myself starting up a blog, so that I could share another of my passions: frugality. Thus, Atlanta’s Frugal Mom came to be. Though the blog is still very much still in it’s fledgling stages, it has become a small source of joy and inspiration.
I’ve also began a staunch passion to campaign against celebrating any further birthdays. Well, to be fair, I’ll take the birthday and any cake that may accompany it, but can I leave off the “one year older” thing? I digress; I won’t rehash previous thoughts here on turning 30
Perhaps my greatest passion this year continues to be that of motherhood. Truly, it is a role I was born to take on! Hubs and I have been amazingly blessed with a sweet, curious, highly energetic daughter; an enigmatic blessing whose enormous proportion is not lost on us. The Tot continues to be a source of delight, giggles and smiles– even with the Twos making special early appearances here and there.
Passion aside, I think it’ time to alter my yearly tradition. It seems more appropriate to balance reflections of the past year, with dreams, hopes, and resolutions for the next year to come. Thus, without further adieu….
2010 Reflections
  1. There’s nothing like ten two-year-olds, in all their innocence, honesty, and spontaneity, to keep you grounded! Teaching preschool, while slightly taxing at times, has been an amazing experience for me thus far; I feel that this is what I’m meant to do at this point in my life.
  2. Blogging is addictive, rewarding, and can end up being as much, or as little, work as you want -or allow it- to be.
  3. Toddler hood is a true test of parents’ patience.
  4. Good things come to those who wait. There are certain things in life for which you simply cannot plan, no matter how much you try. Again, patience is a virtue.
  5. Taking off” from the gym for a few weeks is a bad idea. A really, really bad idea.
  6. …but having childcare at the gym is a Godsend! (I hope the Kid Zone at the JCC is prepared for a romping-stomping-redheaded-tornado come January!)
  7. Quality over quantity – everytime!
  8. There are very few dishes in to which you cannot put spinach.
2011 Resolutions
  1. To live the next 365 days to their fullest, with my wonderfully amazing family along for the ride. (Sappy, I know; but I hope putting it in writing serves as a reminder to not waste a single day away.)
  2. The gym: hit it daily. Or at least drop a few pounds… Whatever.
  3. Get -and then maintain!- some sense of organization for the daily grind.
  4. Learn to sew.
  5. Drink more water. Drink less soda. This will greatly help with resolution #2. N’duh!
  6. Write more! To daughter, for personal reflection, and for the big, bad blogosphere to devour!
  7. Eat more chicken… Wait, that’s a Chik-fil-a ad. Nevermind. There is no number seven….
I resolve only a handful of things for the year, but hope to attain these goals. What goals and aspirations do you have for the coming new year?
I wish you all a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year. May the final moments of 2010 prove well for you, and may you marvel daily at the wonders ahead for you in 2011.
P.S.  You’re very welcome to take a peek at Lessons Learned from years past.
