Wrapping Up the Month of June at Applebee’s

**This post may contain affiliate links. I receive a small amount of compensation when you purchase from my links, which I"ll totally blow on waffle fries and sweet tea, y'all!**

June at Applebee's

Apparently this summer has been more hectic than I realized.  I sat down on June 30 to write this up, but July proved to be just as hectic as June!  Hence, a mid-July publication!

The month of June kept my family busy, our calendars packed, and my schedule quite busy!  First, we renovated the kids’ bathroom,  not because we were sitting idolly by looking for something to do, but because the tub -which was easily over 20 years old- was starting to feel springy when the kids stepped in it, and the shower faucet had developed a steady leak.  Thankfully, when we redid the other two bathrooms in our house a few years ago, we went ahead and bought a sink, tub, toilet, sink faucet, and shower faucet for all three bathrooms because we knew we would eventually have to tackle this bathroom, AND because a family friend got us the products for about half off.

I digress.  So while we were re-doing the bathroom, I stayed home to ensure things were going as they should.  Months earlier, my mom had enrolled the kids in VBS at her church, and my son had three days of Kindergarten camp midweek.  (Yes, my littlest baby is off to kindergarten in the fall!)

The following two weeks of June, I was tied up in Orton Gillingham training.  Orton Gillingham is a systematic and explicit method of teaching reading for people with dyslexia.  I found a way to put back on my special educator hat, brush off my masters degree, and wear another ha in the process.  I took a leap of faith and decided to do this, as it’s been something I’ve toyed with for well over a year.  The two week training was just the first step, but it was an intense two weeks.  Class was from 8:30-3:30 over 30 minutes away.  Thankfully, my parents were on board for helping me out – God bless their generous hearts!

So, essentially, my parents and my kids spent three weeks together.  They’d done something amazing for me, and I knew I wanted to find at least a small way to thank them for their time and energy.  So when I got a dinner invitation, I knew I’d found a perfect solution.

Applebee’s hosted my kids, my parents, and I for dinner recently, to try out their Big and Bold Grill Combo dinner.  I’ll be honest, it had been a while since I had eaten at Applebees, but I can tell you that the experience left us far from disappointed!

Let me start by first complimenting the staff at the Tucker location.  Everyone was super friendly, and happy to help and answer any questions we had about the menu.

We sat down in a corner booth, the kids got to color on and read over the kids menu, and the adults got to look at the special Big and Bold Grill Combo menu.  The kids decided on the mac and cheese, and my parents and I decided to split two Big and Bold Grill Combos amongst the three of us.  This worked well for us, since I only care for the chicken, but my parents are shrimp and ribs people.

June at Applebee's - chips and salsa YUM!

First, we were brought an order of chips and salsa.  My kids and I have seldom met an order of chips and salsa we didn’t like.  The chips were lightly salted, and the salsa was freshly made.  Then, the kids order came out.  They indulged in what they described as delicious mac & cheese.  (Did you know Applebee’s has a house Mac & Cheese on their kids menu, that has chicken in it??)  It was served with applesauce, so they were good to go.

June at Applebee's - kids' meal

The main entrees came out, and -oh my LORD!- they were amazing!  I had the chicken with pico de gallo, which proved to be amazingly tender and flavorful.  The shrimp and ribs were equally fantastic, according to my parents.

But here’s what amazed me most: the sides.  We had bacon-encrusted green beans, broccoli, and “endless fries”.  My favorite, by far, was the broccoli.  It was steamed and seasoned, and I simply couldn’t get enough of it!  The beans were quite tasty – the bacon was a nice touch.  And, well, I could eat fries all day everyday if my waistline wouldn’t betray me in the process.  It was all so daggum tasty, and I tried hard to join the clean plate club, to no avail, and not for lack of trying!

June at Applebees - clean plate

…..and then, my dad ordered dessert for the kids (and himself).  Yep.  Applebee’s even hit dessert out of the park.  The kids enjoyed a blue ribbon brownie to share, and my parents had hot fudge sundae shooters.  Knowing I was there to do a review of Applebee’s, I knew it wouldn’t be right if I didn’t know what each entree was like, right?  So, I sampled each of the desserts, all for the sake of review.  😉

All in all, I was beyond pleased with our trip to Applebee’s.  I highly recommend you find your nearest location, and head over there for lunch or dinner.  Or both.

Also, make sure you sign up for their email club to get started on great rewards, including a FREE birthday treat.   Check with your specific location to find out what weekly specials they might have, like if they participate in a kids eat free program.  The Tucker, GA location offers $5.99 burgers on Mondays from 4pm to close, and 99¢ kids meals on Tuesdays from 4pm to close. (This is current as of June 29, 2017 when we visited – please call to confirm these or any specials before going!)

Would you like to try out some of Applebee’s entrees?   Enter for a chance to win a $25 Applebee’s gift card.  First, simply comment below telling me which items you want to try.  Then, fill out the form below.  Giveaway will run until 7/29/17.  Winner will be randomly selected.  Good luck, y’all!

Lucas Hnath's drama "The Christians" focuses on Pastor Paul, the founding pastor of a mega-church who's suddenly hit with a crisis of faith. He feels compelled to lead his thousands-strong flock in a new and unexpected direction on its 20th anniversary -- one that directly conflicts with the former tenets of his ministry. When his motives are questioned, both his professional and personal relationships are put to the test. Backed by a community choir, "The Christians" is both epic and unexpectedly intimate. This provocative play now comes to Atlanta's Actors Express, offering an unflinching look at faith -- of any denomination -- and its power to unite or divide. [less-]

Brimming with poetic language and emotional longing, Tennessee Williams' memory play "The Glass Menagerie" is rightly considered a true classic, a work that's lost none of its power over the generations. Set in a Depression-era St. Louis tenement, aspiring poet Tom struggles with a mind-numbing job and a smothering home life. His overbearing mother, a former Southern belle, constantly pushes her son to bring home a "gentleman caller" for his painfully shy sister Laura, who escapes the world around her by obsessing over her collection of intricate glass animals. But when Tom finally produces a male visitor, the guest's presence sends shock waves through the family -- and the fragile fantasy world they've built may be irreparably shattered. You can experience this moving, beautiful production at Marietta's New Theatre in the Square. [less-]

"Misled from childhood, where I went astray; Till this day I still pray for a better way. Can't help but feel hopeless and heartbroke; From the start I felt the racism 'cause I'm dark." These lyrics appear on Tupac Shakur's "My Block," a song that forms the spiritual backbone of this Broadway musical that utilizes the words and music of Tupac to tell a non-biographical story about family, camaraderie, revenge, change and, ultimately, hope. The harsh realities of inner-city life remain as relevant now as they were when this show's songs -- like "Dear Mama," Me Against the World" and "Hail Mary" -- were written, and the lessons found within are profoundly important. For the first time since its Broadway debut three years ago, Tony Award-winning director Kenny Leon brings "Holler If Ya Hear Me" to the stage at Atlanta's Southwest Arts Center. [less-]

Laugh-out-loud funny and completely interactive, the series has been selling out shows in the UK since 2010 and finally makes its way stateside. With audiences dictating when the drunk actor must drink more, no two performances are ever the same. And lest you think it disrespectful, it's all based on the good 'ol days of the raucous, interactive and vibrant Elizabethan theater scene. The most fun, bawdy Shakespeare play you'll ever see happens at Atlanta's Village Theatre. [less-]

Cheap Date Night Ideas Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be another occasion for which to go in debt.  On the contrary, there’s plenty of free, cheap, and frugal date night ideas around Atlanta -and anywhere – just put the leg work in to it ahead of time.  Here are a few great Atlanta date night ideas, but most can be date night ideas for just about anywhere.  And keep in mind, these date night ideas are great, not just for Valentine’s Day, but all year long!

Frugal Date Night Ideas around Atlanta (and Beyond!)

  1. Coffee Date.  No, don’t run through your local coffee kiosk for this one.  Actually scope out your semi-local coffee shops or coffee bars and take your special someone there.  Find a quiet table and enjoy the coffee and conversation.  I’m willing to bet that most of the time you share coffee, it’s when you are in a rush in the mornings.  This will be a nice change and therefore a great date.  Check Scoutmob for a local coffee shop near you!
  2. Dive Bar.  Going out for drinks doesn’t have to be expensive.  You can look for dive bar that offers cheap drinks and a unique atmosphere.  These bars are often provide just about the best people watching opportunities that exist.  Again, Scoutmob it, folks!  (I swear, this isn’t an ad for Scoutmob.  I just really like promoting free apps!)
  3. Hit the Trail.  Take your special someone on a romantic hike and a bring a picnic along with you.  Do an internet search for trails near year and their difficulty scale – or check out my list of free or cheap hikes around Atlanta.  Be sure to choose one that makes sense for your fitness level (they range from super easy, park like strolls to more strenuous ones).  Just be sure choose wisely so that you both have fun!
  4. Attend a Paint Night.  Are you and/or your sweetheart artistic?  Paint nights are very popular right now and many restaurants and local event centers are offering paint nights for a very reasonable rate.  I’ve personally been to All Fired Up and would recommend them, and have heard great things about Painting with a Twist, too.
  5. Dinner and movie (at home).  Dinner and movie at home can be very romantic!  Just make sure to mix it up a bit so it’s not the same thing as every other night.  Maybe the two of you can cook a meal together and enjoy each other’s company with a candlelit meal.  Follow that up by snuggling on the sofa watching a movie.  Or, if you’re near Studio Movie Grill, snag this great deal while it’s available!
  6. Take a YouTube lesson together.  Learning is sexy.  Lucky for those of us on a budget, there are lots of free classes available at our fingertips.  From cooking to musical instruments to singing and drawing, you can learn just about anything on YouTube.  Grab your honey, open up the laptop and learn a new skill together.
  7. Hit up happy hour.  Many restaurants now offer happy hour discounts where you can order select food and drink items for half price!  This is a great way to save and still go out!
  8. Play a game of miniature golf.  When was the last time you played mini golf? I didn’t realize how cheap it was!  And oh so fun too!  Check Groupon for a potential mini-golf deal near you.
  9. Group game night.  Valentine’s Day doesn’t always have to be just for two.  Why not invite a group of friends over for a group game night and enjoy everyone’s company?  It is free and fun, plus it will give you a chance to invite those friends that don’t h 73 answered questions ave a partner to spend the day with.  You can never go wrong with a classic game like Pictionary, Phase 10, or try something new like Watch Ya Mouth or even Pie Face.
  10. Find a local musical act playing or check out an open mic night and pay a small cover fee for live music and entertainment.
  11. Explore Your City!  There are tons of free and cheap things to do in Atlanta.  You can also peruse sites like Groupon for restaurants and activities inspiration on the cheap, as well as Venue Kings and Goldstar for concerts, shows, and sporting events.

Making the Most of Stone Mountain Christmas

Recently, I was the delighted to be invited back with my family to experience Stone Mountain Christmas.  Last winter, we played at Snow Mountain, but hadn’t yet gotten to see the magic of Stone Mountain Christmas, so of course we jumped at the opportunity to go.  Suffice it to say, it is now on my list of family-friendly things to do in Winter in Atlanta!

From the whimsical sing-along Christmas train ride with The Gift (my Thomas-loving son’s favorite, of course!), to the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 4-D (seriously, 10 minutes of fun and cuteness!), visiting Santa, the great variety of live performances peppered throughout, or my daughter’s absolute favorite: meeting the Snow Angel – there’s something for everyone at Stone Mountain Christmas.  The evening is topped off with the Snow Angel Fireworks Finale.

How can you make the most of your time at Stone Mountain Christmas this holiday season?  Here are my top tips for doing so:

Coca-Cola’s Strong Military Commitment

Coca-Colas Military Commitment - soldier

I recently spent the day at The Coca-Cola Company headquarters, helping to stuff care packages to send to the military.  This is a sponsored campaign for Coca-Cola; however, as always, all opinions and bad puns are 100% my own.

I never thought packing tubes of toothpaste would lead to such humbling, drop-to-my-knees revelations, and yet, that’s exactly what happened to me the other day.  I was invited to work alongside hundreds of Coca-Cola employees who volunteered to help stuff care packages for the USO to send to our troops.  It was an assembly-lined process, and in its seventh year, ran like a well-oiled machine.  I happened to be in front of the large bin of toothpaste tubes, at the front of the assembly line.  Next to me were packages of disposable razor blades, and a few bins down from there were bottles of eye drops.  Knowing the service members offered feedback and helped determine what items were NEEDED for these care bags made the eye drops all the more of a reality to me.

Eye drops.

I mean, I have eye drops at my house, and shortly after LASIK, I kept eye drops on me at all times, and recall the insane discomfort of dry eyes, and thus the necessity of carrying eye drops with me at all times.  But my discomfort was short-lived (and elective).  Enough of our service members expressed a need for dry eye relief, to necessitate carrying it with them at all times.

Coca-Cola's Strong Military Commitment - USO care packages

It both blew my mind and made my heart hurt just a little, but also gave me a sense of pride in my friends, my family, and complete strangers who have selflessly served our country.  Such a simple thing as dry eyes also made my heart swell with pride, knowing the sacrifices these brave men and women face everyday, and the men and women who went before them.  It’s but one small indication of what our military go through on a daily basis while deployed, and a small token of the sacrifice and discomfort they face in order to serve our country.

This made the experience at Coca-Cola earlier this week all the more real, and all the more worthwhile, in knowing that the work we did that day would make an impact on our men and women serving our country.  Also, I was pleased to learn more about Coca-Cola’s ties to the military, as well as the USO.

Coca-Cola's Strong Military Commitment - USO stuffing party

The Coca-Cola company’s rich history of supporting the military stretches back 75 years when the company began a unique partnership with the US military.  You see, Coca-Cola has been working alongside the United Service Organizations (USO) since its beginning back in 1941, when then company president Robert Woodruff committed “to see that every person in uniform gets a bottle of Coca-Cola for 5¢” (wouldn’t it be nice if those prices were still in effect?!).  In fact, when General Eisenhower reached out to Woodruff in 1941, it was to ask for Coke to be sent overseas during the war.  Plants followed military theaters, which greatly helped launch Coca-Cola on to the international stage.  By the end of the war, over 5 billion Coca-Colas had been served.

Now, Coca-Cola remains committed to honoring our nation’s heroes through veteran hiring and mentoring programs, which I learned more about first hand in a sit-down with Mark Rahyia, Chief US Sales & Operations Officer, Coca-Cola Refreshments, who has been with the company for 19 years, and proudly served in the Navy.  Most impressive were these facts:

Fun Facts: Coca-Cola’s Military Commitment

  • In 2013, Coca-Cola made a 5 year goal to hire 5,000 veterans.  The company had already been hiring veterans, but wanted to focus specifically on this goal.  As of October, they’ve exceeded this goal, more than a year ahead of schedule.
  • Veterans looking for information about career opportunities at Coca-Cola can visit http://www.enjoycareers.com/military/.  They also participate in the Department of Defense’s Military Spouse Employment Partnership, among other recruitment programs.
  • Coca-Cola is part of Partnership for Youth Success (PaYS), which is a recruitment program for youth military, which guarantees job interviews for 3-4 companies (Coke included) upon leaving the military.  The group works to support veterans both inside and outside the company.
  • Since 2014, Coca-Cola has partnered with American Corporate Partners (ACP), a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting veterans in their transition from the armed services to the civilian workforce. To date, more than 100 Coca-Cola employees have served as mentors to 124 veterans making this transition.
  • Coca-Cola is part of the U.S. Army Training With Industry (TWI) and U.S. Air Force Education With Industry (EWI) programs, which bring service members into the company (to a department commensurate with their military career) to learn business perspectives and best practices and share their unique military experience and backgrounds.
  • “7” is the magic number this year for Coca-Cola.  They are celebrating the 75th birthday of the USO and 75 years of partnership with the organization to support our military.  This week marked 70,000 care packages Coca-Cola assembled over the last 7 years to help boost morale overseas.
  • Active military personnel and veterans are always offered free admission to the World of Coca-Cola.  Surrounding Veterans Day each year, a discount is extended to family members, as well, so military families can enjoy the World of Coca-Cola together at a deep discount.
  • Every year Coke recognizes employees who are veterans, or employees with family in the military.  Many historic pieces of military art are displayed along the hallways of Coca-Cola headquarters.  Peppered in with posters of employees include the artwork proudly depicting military med and women from the 1940s campaigns, original artwork by Haddon Sundblom.Coca-Cola's Strong Military Commitment - artwork

As a Georgia girl raised in Atlanta, I’ve always felt a strong loyalty to the Coca-Cola brand, not only because it’s always been the “local brand”, but because I strongly see the company’s presence both in the local community AND on the global stage.  Seeing now the strong support Coca-Cola extends to our men and women who serve our country only strengthens my loyalty and love of the brand.  Both my grandfathers were in the Navy, along with my father-in-law (a Vietnam vet), several uncles and cousins also served, as well as childhood friends who proudly still serve our country (a few taking on multiple tours, God bless them!) – all this drives Coca-Cola’s commitment a little closer to home for me, and making me proud to support the company and thus also the military.

This Friday is Veterans’ Day.  Please thank a veteran or military member in your life, not just on Veterans’ Day but any given day.  Share with them all the great ways companies around the country are thanking them, and share below in the comments with ways YOU can thank our fine men and women who serve our country.
