Candytopia

You may have heard Candytopia has made it’s way to Atlanta! Imagine if Willy Wonka made a museum ….out of candy! When I first learned about this magical event, that’s what came to mind! This limited engagement is in Atlanta now through June 2, so grab your tickets while you can.

Sara, one of Atlanta’s Frugal Mom’s contributors, had the opportunity to check it out during a media preview, along with her toddler son. Frugal tip: kiddos 3 and under are FREE. Before checking out the outrageously interactive candy wonderland of Candytopia, here are her tips for enjoying the experience with little ones.

10 Tips for Visiting Candytopia with Little Kids

  1. Order Your Tickets Ahead of Time.Because the exhibit is interactive and will take about an hour to experience, tickets have a specific time for when you can enter so they can keep the groups to about 30 people at a time. Unfortunately, there’s no box office so ordering ahead of your visit is the only way to go.
  2. Download the Candytopia App or visit Sru.sh for your Candytopia QR Code. To take advantage of the interactive photos in the exhibit, you’ll need this QR Code available on the app or the Sugar Rush website. Works for iPhone or Android. And it’s free!
  3. Bring Your Own Camera. Although there are photo ops only available with the Candytopia or Sugar Rush QR Code, there’s plenty of great shots you can get with your phone or old-school camera.
  4. Park on Level B. Although the entrance is on the front on the shopping center facing Oak Valley Rd and Peachtree Rd, you’ll exit at Level B of the Parking Deck.
  5. Potty Break Before You Enter. There’s one restroom and it’s halfway into the experience. Best to visit a bathroom before entering.
  6. Leave The Stroller in the Car. Because of the crowds and difficulty maneuvering, strollers are prohibited from the exhibit.
  7. Be Ready for the Noise. The whimsy of the experience includes loud music and sounds that may not go over well with some kids. There are air cannons in the confetti room and marshmallow pit that can startle little ones (and a few adults). Guides will try to accommodate sensitive ears, but it’s not always so easy.
  8. Don’t Forget Your Socks. No shoes allowed in the marshmallow pit and you do not want to go barefoot in there. Trust me.
  9. Be Ready For A Workout in the Marshmallow Pit. I won’t lie, I thought it would be like a fluffy ball pit but those firm foam marshmallows give you a workout as you try to move through it.
  10. Be prepared for the Gift Shop. If you’re familiar with the “gift shop at the end” concept, it always helps to be prepared with how much you’re willing to spend. A T-shirt for $20, a pencil pouch for $5 but at Candytopia, be ready for the Bulk Candy wall. The candy in this room is not free and as much as your little one may have collected along the way, they may want more.

Have you had a chance to go to Candytopia yet? Once it leaves Atlanta, they’ll hit the Mall of America. Perhaps it’ll make it’s way back to Atlanta for future engagements? In the meantime, if you’ve been, we’d love to hear about your experience with Candytopia! Leave a comment below.

Summer Activities for Young Preschoolers

activities for young preschoolers

As a preschool teacher, I’m frequently asked about ways to help facilitate learning and growth at home, particularly what activities for young preschoolers can parents work on at home.  During spring conferences with my two-year-old class’s parents, this question is second only to questions regarding potty training.   Trust me, I get how long these summer days can be, and being able to fill your child’s days with meaningful, age-appropriate activities can make or break your summer.  (or winter break.  Or spring break.  Or ….Tuesday!)  So what are some activities for your young preschooler, or any time of the year, to do at home? 100+ Sensory Table Ideas for Your Preschooler

**This post may contain affiliate links. I receive a small amount of compensation when you purchase from my links, which I"ll totally blow on waffle fries and sweet tea, y'all!**

100+ Sensory Table IdeasAs a preschool teacher, I’m always looking for ways to spice things up in my classroom, including new and fun sensory table ideas.  Thankfully, an amazing coworker created a master list many moons ago, and shared it with me as I was starting out.

Whether you’re a preschool teacher, or a parent of a preschooler, you’ll appreciate the diversity of a good sensory table.  Sensory tables provide an opportunity for preschoolers to experience a wide array of fine motor skills, as well as some gross motor skills, all a sensory-rich environment.  Don’t have a full-blown sensory table for your home or your classroom?  Remember, water/sand tables make great sensory tables, too!

Also, the sensory table ideas listed below can be mixed and matched for whole new levels of experience.  Toss in tools to assist in manipulating the items in the table, such as cups and measuring spoons for pouring, tongs/kid-friendly tweezers, and scissors for snipping and cutting.  Also, you’ll notice, most of these items can be found for free or cheap.  There are some items worth making an intentional purchase, but most of this can be found around your home, or collected over the course of a few weeks or months, or as a collective effort by classroom parents. How Mosquito Prevention Helped My Kids Play Outside

This post is sponsored by BabbleBoxx.com on behalf of Mosquito Joe.  I’ve received a form of compensation in exchange for this post; however all opinions, experiences, and bad puns are 100% my own.

Y’all may have noticed, I have two redheaded children, right?  What you may not know is all the fun little trivia facts that come along with being a ginger.  For example, worldwide, redheads make up only 2% of the population, while in Scotland they’re 13%, followed closely by Ireland at 10%.

Mosquito Joe mosquito control

Another little tidbit of trivia?  Redheads are more susceptible to bug bites.  In my kids case, they’re magnets for mosquitoes.  Not only are my kids apparently like a nice little dessert for mosquitoes, my daughter also has strong reactions to mosquito bites.  About half the time, a single bite will swell up on her.  The first time we saw this, she was about 3, and she had a bite on her tricep that swelled up the size of a golf ball.  That prompted a weekend trip to urgent care, where we started to learn about her reactions, and how to handle them with OTC allergy meds.  Once, she got a bite a few inches above her eye, and her entire forehead swelled up! Car Games for Kids

Morning car rides can be daunting if you’re not a morning person, and sometimes even if you ARE a morning person.  Although I believe it’s perfectly ok to let your kids be bored, I also believe it’s important to use moments together wisely.  So we tend to spend our morning car ride having conversations, and playing kids car games that help wake them up and keep them on their toes, AND it’s all done sans technology!  Here I delve beyond “Punch-Buggy Charlie” and the license plate game for some good no-tech car games for kids.

Car Games for Kids

20 Questions – We each take a turn coming up with a person, place, or thing.  Then the other participants take turns asking yes or no questions to figure out what it is.  If we figure it out before the 20th question, we win; if not, then the person answering the questions wins.  This is a good exercise in making deductions and also figuring out good “category” questions. Making the Most of Stone Mountain Christmas

Recently, I was the delighted to be invited back with my family to experience Stone Mountain Christmas.  Last winter, we played at Snow Mountain, but hadn’t yet gotten to see the magic of Stone Mountain Christmas, so of course we jumped at the opportunity to go.  Suffice it to say, it is now on my list of family-friendly things to do in Winter in Atlanta!

From the whimsical sing-along Christmas train ride with The Gift (my Thomas-loving son’s favorite, of course!), to the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 4-D (seriously, 10 minutes of fun and cuteness!), visiting Santa, the great variety of live performances peppered throughout, or my daughter’s absolute favorite: meeting the Snow Angel – there’s something for everyone at Stone Mountain Christmas.  The evening is topped off with the Snow Angel Fireworks Finale.
